Bicycle-based aerosol measurements in the inner city of Budapest
EGU 2024, 2023
Fine particulate aerosols from urban air pollution pose serious health risks, but traditional monitoring stations cannot track pollutant changes with adequate spatial and temporal resolution. In our research, we measured PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅ concentrations along Budapest's prominent bicycle routes using calibrated DustTrak™ II instruments mounted on bicycles, along with a low-cost datalogger and GPS application. We recorded approximately 150 measurement series with 2-second sampling, projecting our data into a 110×110 meter grid network using an automated MATLAB algorithm, thus creating a quality-assured reference database. This enabled mapping of air pollution trends and hotspots, spatio-temporal analysis of the PM₂.₅/PM₁₀ ratio, and percentage representation of pollutant fraction differences along the routes.
